Program Description:

This program provides a deeper knowledge on individual taxation for those who are already familiar with a series 1040 form.  It adds some complexity on an individual return preparation by describing income and allowable expenses for the self-employed and independent contractors.  It also pays particular attention to subjects as business use of a vehicle, introduces concepts somewhat more complicated like depreciation and amortization, self-employment tax and use of a home for business purposes.

 

Syllabus:
As a result of participating in this program, attendees will be able to understand and explain the following:

  • The advantages and disadvantages of running a Sole Proprietorship as the simplest form of business from a taxation standpoint.
  • Relevant aspects to consider when determining whether an activity is carried on for profit or if it may be catalogued as a hobby.
  • Accounting methods available for the purpose of measuring the business’ performance.
  • The type of TIN needed to compliantly run the business: SSN or EIN.
  • The importance of discerning between personal and business expenses.
  • Sources of income and supporting requirements.
  • The different items of expense that can be accounted for and a brief explanation of each.
  • Self-employment tax.
  • Business use and allocation of a vehicle.
  • Assets and their depreciation: normal and accelerated.  Section 179 expense.
  • Other asset amortization.
  • Business use of a home
